The Premier, and the Premier alone, can call a provincial general election.
Despite numerous calls by the Alberta Liberals, pro-democracy groups and various public interest organizations, the Progressive Conservative Government has repeatedly rejected the idea of having fixed election dates. The last election was held on March 3rd, 2008 and Alberta's election law stipulates that an election has to be called no later than 5 years after the last one. Albertans must again go to the polls no later than March 3rd, 2013.
All signs point to an election in the spring of 2012 or the fall of 2011. There are some pundits and political observers/insiders however who predict an even earlier contest, perhaps as early as winter 2010 or spring 2011. Regardless, we must be ready to hit the ground running with volunteers in place and money in the bank.
