Political History: The provincial constituency (electoral district) of Edmonton-McClung was created in 1993. It was first represented by Grant Mitchell from 1993 to 1998. Mitchell was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in 1986 as the Liberal MLA for Edmonton-Meadowlark after defeating then PC Speaker of the House Gerry Amerongen. Mitchell served as leader of the Alberta Liberal Party from 1994 to 1998.
In 1998, following Mitchell’s retirement from politics, a by-election was held in McClung. Former PC Cabinet Minister and newly elected Alberta Liberal Party leader Nancy MacBeth won by over 1,000 votes, defeating PC candidate Michael Mooney.
In the 2001 election, MacBeth lost to PC candidate Mark Norris. Norris served as Alberta’s Economic Development Minister from 2001 to 2004.
In 2004, first-time Alberta Liberal Party candidate Mo Elsalhy defeated Norris and returned McClung to the Liberal tent. Mo was the youngest opposition member in the 26th Legislature, held several critic portfolios and went on to become Deputy House Leader for the Official Opposition.
In 2008, in what was referred to by some as the 'Stelmach Sweep' of Edmonton, the Conservatives re-captured McClung in a fiercely fought campaign that wasn't without controversy. Despite increasing their vote over 2004, the Elsalhy team saw the constituency Mo worked very hard to represent cross the Assembly floor to join the Tories. It marked the first time McClung had voted for a backbencher!
